As the calendar winds its way towards the end of April, provincials sit just around the corner for the Battlefords Volleyball Club.

The club will see each of their 11 teams from 13U to 18U at both the men’s and women’s ranks compete at a provincial tournament over the next three weeks, including four ranked amongst the elite in their age groups: The 16U and 18U men’s teams (each ranked second), the 14U women’s team (ranked fourth) and the 17U women’s team (sixth) heading into their provincial tournaments.

Paul Sarsons with BVC said it’s been great to see so many of the local teams find the success they have this season, coming off a challenging last couple of years.

“I think with four teams ranked in the top eight, with a couple ranked in the top two, it’s a good showing for our teams after a two-year hiatus that they’re able to compete at a high level with the rest of the province,” he said. “That means our club has done a good job of maintaining skill development and athlete development during COVID.”

Assistant coach with the 17U women’s squad, Heather Berezowski said as the team returns to action this weekend in Regina for a final tune-up ahead of provincials, the key to the their success boils down to their resiliency and ability to rise to the occasion in big games.

“They take a loss to heart and come back 100 times stronger the next game,” she said. “They adapt quickly and fix what needs to be fixed […] the girls have faced some tough teams and that is when they always play their best; this team is always ready for a challenge.”

The 17Us will head to Saskatoon and Warman for their provincial tournament May 6-8.

Among those heading to provincials in Saskatoon next weekend, April 30 to May 1, are the 16U women’s team. Head coach Kim Voegeli said they too are looking forward to the opportunity ahead, after really hitting their stride over the last number of weeks, as the season has progressed.

“We have been working our way up the standings each Sask Cup, and the girls are all getting along great and have really bonded as a team,” Voegeli said. “Our team culture is exactly what we wanted to cultivate.”

Club provincials will be held in Saskatoon and Warman this year, with the 13U and 14U women’s teams and 14U men’s team’s tournaments April 22 to 24, the 15U and 16U women’s teams’ Apr. 29 to May 1, and the 15U and 16U 18U men’s teams and 17U and 18U women’s May 6-8.
