The Battlefords Volleyball Club (BVC) saw four teams head to provincials in Saskatoon and Warman over the weekend, with some strong finishes against the best in Saskatchewan.

The BVC’s Men’s 14U team finished second in Division 2 and 10th overall in the province, while on the women’s side, the 14U Blaze finished third in Division 1, the 13U Crush got sixth in Division 1, and the 13U Heat finished 10th in Division 2.

Head coach of the 13U Crush, Kate Nichol said she was very proud of the way the team was able to play their best at the most important time, on the provincial stage.

“It was pretty exciting, it was the best they’ve ever played so it was awesome to watch and made for a lot of great matches,” Nichol said. “We really put up a fight and even ended up taking both the gold and silver medalists to three sets, so it was awesome to see the girls really live up to their potential throughout the weekend.”

Men’s program coordinator with the BVC, Paul Sarsons said with each of the four teams finishing top-10 in the province and two top-three in their division. There’s lots to like about the club’s opening weekend at provincials.

“So far in all the categories we’ve had our top teams finishing in the top-eight, and especially in the women’s side, that’s exceptional,” Sarsons said. “There’s a lot of competition in the province and there’s a lot of girl’s teams that are going. And on the men’s side, a top-two finish for that group is special too. I think it really goes to show the work of our coaches for putting the time in with the players, looking to get better and preparing the teams for competition.”

Provincial play will continue each of the next two weekends for the BVC, as the 15U and 16U women’s teams will head to Saskatoon and Warman next weekend, April 29 to May 1, with the 15U, 16U and 18U men’s teams and 17U and 18U women’s teams in action May 6–8.
