Future Broncos hit the ice for the team’s Spring Camp

Players from across Canada and the United States descended on Humboldt over the weekend to hit the ice at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

Looking to the future of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Humboldt Broncos, head coach Scott Barney and the rest of the coaching staff spent three days watching potential players at their Spring Hockey Camp.

Players were broken up into two groups, the 2003-2006 born players first having their own time to show off their skills followed by 2007-2008 players taking to the ice.

Barney told northeastNOW they were looking for both players that are ready to commit to a junior level team as well as potential players they want for their drafts moving forward. Skill-wise, Barney said they were looking at what players themselves were bringing to the team whether that be in goal, scoring potential or defensive prowess.

“Obviously, everybody’s been identified, right? So we kind of want them to do their role. Don’t be doing something different than what was for the reason why they’re there. If you’re a goal scorer and you’re coming in, that’s what we want to see.”

There was a lot of positive feedback from the players and the families that came out to watch, including the final top 40 came on Sunday afternoon, said Barney. It was great to see the young up and coming juniors, especially the local players.

“We want to have local players as much as we can.”

Barney is expecting some new commits to come from the spring camp and players will once again meet at the fall camp later in August before the September SJHL pre-season.
