The Battlefords and District Community Foundation (BDCF) recently presented scholarships for Fine Arts, and Engineering to three students from the Battlefords.

Seth Kennedy and Dmitri Masich have received $570 each as recipients of this year’s award from the Hazel Asmussen Fund for Fine Arts, while Cole Fransoo has received just over $7,900 as recipient of this year’s award from the Peter Lewochko Fund.

Kennedy is a visual artist graduating from North Battleford Comprehensive High School this spring, who will attend the University of Saskatchewan and would like to become a professional artist.

Masich is a musician graduating from John Paul II Collegiate, who also plans to attend the U of S, and has studied percussion, violin and piano, and would like to branch out into music production and songwriting.

Fransoo has been accepted into the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan for the fall.

The Hazel Asmussen Fund was established with the BDCF in 2007 in memory of Hazel Asmussen, a retired nurse and local artist, who had long been involved in community building and created the fund to help post-secondary fine arts students with their school expenses.

The Peter Lewochko Fund provides annual scholarships to students pursuing post-secondary education in Agriculture, Education or Engineering. A farmer by trade, Lewochko established the scholarship in 2013 as a legacy to his belief in the value of education.

The BDCF currently manages more than 25 funds that will contribute to a range of interests from the arts and health care to post-secondary scholarships and recreation. BDCF will distribute over $60,000 in annual community grants and scholarships this year with more than $1,300,000 total donated over the years to community groups and projects.
