It will be a coming home for Battlefords North Stars goaltender, Michael Harroch this fall, as the Stars’ 2022 Playoff MVP is B.C. bound, having announced his commitment to Simon Fraser University for the 2022-23 season.

Located just a short walk from his family home in Burnaby, B.C., Harroch said he’s looking forward to starting the next chapter in his hockey career in his home community.

“It’s super exciting; it’s a good program and a really good school and it’s literally two minutes away from home, so that will be awesome,” Harroch said. “I get to live at home, I get to play with a lot of my old friends and the team is hoping to make the jump to U Sports in the next year or two as well, so I’m super excited for that.”

On the classroom side, Harroch will pursue a degree in business.

A difference-maker between the pipes who was acquired by the North Stars in mid-October, Harroch wasted no time establishing himself amongst the elite in the SJHL this season, stopping all 37 shots he faced for a shutout on the road in his opening game.

In 24 games with the Stars, Harroch would go on to post a sterling 13-4-4 record and .925 save percentage, with a 2.82 goals-against average and three shutouts – including two in his last six games against the league’s top two teams in Estevan and Humboldt.

Harroch then continued his standout play into the playoffs, where he made 38-plus saves in five of the Stars’ six games of their first round series with the Flin Flon Bombers, ending the postseason with a .920 save percentage.

Head coach of the Stars, Brayden Klimosko said he’s looking forward to seeing Harroch find continued success in the next chapter of his career.

“He came in here and really solidified our goaltending position, won us a lot of hockey games and kept us in a lot of games, and I think his game will translate really well to the next level,” Klimosko said. “He’s a good performer, he’s a big guy in there and he’s just gotten better as his junior career went along, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do moving forward.”

With Simon Fraser University, Harroch joins one of the premier organizations in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. The team finished the 2021-22 season first overall with a perfect 12-0 record to lead all teams.
