Northwest Saskatchewan hopes for rainfall after dry, cool April

May 5, 2022 | 4:22 PM

Saskatchewan is experiencing another very dry spring.

According to Environment Canada, the northwest region of the province had one of the driest April month’s in years, as well as one of the coldest. This has lent a hand in creating conditions that fire departments are monitoring closely, as temperatures are now well above the seasonal average.

Today’s highs are 26 Celsius in the Battlefords and 22 C in Meadow Lake, a sharp contrast from just weeks ago.

In the Battlefords, the average temperature was almost three degrees colder than average last month, 17th coldest recording for that period in 81 years. This area also only accrued 6.1 mm of precipitation, just 24 per cent of the Battlefords 30 year average.

“So, that made it the 11th driest April in 79 years,” Meteorologist Terri Lang said. “Cool and dry, you don’t usually get that kind of combination.”

Meadow Lake has also been similarly dry and cool. It was the community’s 13th coldest April in 71 years and with just 4.1 mm of precipitation compared to the average of 25.1 mm, it was the eight driest.

Currently, both areas are experiencing the first warm period of the year, but are expected to drop over the next week. The Battlefords is expected to hit 18 C on Saturday, dropping to 14 C. Meadow Lake could see some brief showers Friday with a high of 20 C, before dropping to 16 C on Saturday and 13 C on Tuesday.

Lang said the following week may see a cooler, wetter pattern, which times out well with the storm season. Because of the previous month, getting crops in the ground to supplement moisture hasn’t occurred yet.

This nice dry stretch with above average temperatures, is about to come to an end, but it’s not going to snow or anything like that,” she said.

“Temperatures will take a little bit of a dip, but they are more or less running above seasonal averages. So it’s hard to complain about that.”

Lang added that any showers in the region over the next two days are unlikely to have much accumulation of moisture, but the following week could.

“That would be good news for farmers, given how things have been so dry.”

Overnight conditions in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake will drop believe 10 C after tonight. Monday night will be around 0 C.
