Virtual Food Drive brings in 8,000 pounds of food

May 6, 2022 | 5:16 PM

The first ever Virtual Food Drive to help the local Food Bank was a big success.

Hosted by Pattison Media, Q98, CJNB, and 93.3 The Rock, the event ran throughout the month of April.

Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre executive director Erin Katerynych said just before the food drive the food bank was in desperate need.

The shelves were almost empty. The food bank had to cut back on the size of food hampers it was giving people because it was basically running out of food. Fortunately, the food drive helped get the word out, and the community responded.

“Thanks to the radio food drive, we collected over 8,000 pounds of food throughout the month of April, which really helped stock up our shelves again,” Katerynych said. “We also got a lot of cash donations, which allows us to be able to buy food in bulk.”

She added the virtual food drive was “a complete success.”

“We’ve very happy,” Katerynych said. “The Battlefords community is always fantastic when we put out the call that we need help. This community is great at rising up and helping us out.”

Feast and Festival

Coming up later this month, the All Star Feast and Festival is planned at the Agriplex on Saturday, May 21, running from noon to midnight.

The event is hosted by longtime food bank supporter Joseph Sopiwnyk.

A variety of musical groups will take part, including Raven She Hollers. All proceeds from the festival will benefit the food bank.

“It will be a day filled with fun,” Katerynych said. “There will be fiddle and country music for the first part of the day. Then, after supper it will be rock and roll.”

Those whose ticket purchase includes a meal will enjoy a hot roast beef dinner. There will also be chicken, gluten free and vegan dishes on offer.

People are asked to bring a can of non-perishable food for the food Bank when they attend.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre in North Battleford. Those who wish to have the dinner also must buy their tickets by May 13.
