Team Saskatchewan’s Trampoline and Tumbling team, at next month’s Western Canada Cup, will consist of 11 athletes from all corners of the province including Prince Albert.

Cohen L’Abbe, 14, and Haylee Lang, 15, were both supposed to attend the event two years ago, but missed out when it was cancelled due to COVID. L’Abbe acknowledged this competition represents his biggest one to date.

“I am really excited. It’s been a dream of mine ever since I joined gym,” he said.

L’Abbe has been involved in gymnastics for nearly ten years, and is current training three times a week at the immaculate Aerials gym.

“It’s gonna be a new experience because Team Sask is all just one big group. You’re technically still competing against them because we have been competing against them all year but you are also competing against different provinces,” he said.

Haylee Lang also acknowledged how much she’s been waiting for this competition, and despite her stomach already doing some early backflips, remains focused on what she needs to do.

“I am just focused on my skills and making them sharper,” she said.

The event next month also marks a first for Morgan Deck, who will be watching from the sidelines as a competitive coach. She explained the preparation goes beyond physically knowing the routines, but also involves a mental component.

“It’s scary, I was an athlete once,” she said. “I like being a coach better than an athlete.”

The Western Canada Cup takes place in Port Moody, B.C. from June 3–5.
