Chief of PBCN responds to plans for her removal, taking matter before the courts

Chief Karen Bird has responded to claims that she be removed from her elected position with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN).

In a recent press release, Bird claimed she is being undermined as she tries to address “a poor governance system, a dysfunctional administration that would not follow direction, and a huge deficit created by poor fiscal management over the previous years,” and has been blocked by the vice-Chief and some of the councillors for the nation.

According to Bird, while the Elder’s Council has made the decision to remove her, they have not been fulfilling their role of advising and guiding leadership.

“I am still the elected Chief of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. By making this unfounded decision, the Elder’s Council breached the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation’s 2014 Elections Code.”

Bird also announced her intentions to take the matter to court as the Elders acted without authority and the petition needed to remove her has not been filed.

The PBCN has not publically called for her removal on their Facebook page or website.

PCBN represents eight communities across Treaties six and 10 with their head office in Prince Albert.
