ELEVATOR RESCUE

Eight people rescued after elevator becomes stuck

May 17, 2022 | 1:10 PM

Local firefighters had to rescue eight people that were stuck in an elevator Saturday night.

Crews were called to a business on 38 Street and Third Ave. West for reports that someone was stuck in the elevator.

After arriving, firefighters found out eight people were trapped in the elevator on the fourth floor.

Firefighters isolated the power from the elevator and were able to open the doors to let the occupants out. Thankfully, there were no injuries.

While calls like these are rare, Battalion Chief Anton Lavallie said they do happen.

“We will actually have a lot of calls when there’s a power outage or maybe the power grid might flicker say in a windstorm or a thunderstorm. That’s when we’ll see something like that happen.”

Lavallie said in situations like this, firefighters check the people in the elevator to make sure they’re ok and what caused the elevator to stop whether it was a power outage or mechanical failure.

LISTEN: Battalion Chief Anton Lavallie explains what happens when firefighters respond to a call involving those stuck in an elevator.

He said the biggest advice he can offer those who find themselves stuck in an elevator is to remain calm.

“The old movies where you see the elevators dropping, it just doesn’t happen. There’s brakes on the elevators and when there’s a malfunction those brakes are locked in, they’re really not going to go in anywhere.”

He added many elevator units have emergency phones in case no one there has their cell phone handy.
