After 45 years of serving the community, a Prince Albert physician is retiring and moving on to the next chapter of her life.

Dr. Lalita Malhotra said June 30th will be her last day working out of her clinic on Central Avenue.

She said it is an emotional time for her but feels now is the right time to move on.

“I’ve had my relationship with my patients for the past 30, 40 years. It’s hard I think but it’s got to be done some time. I thank them for all their patience and everything and for sticking by me all these years.”

Born in 1941 in Delhi, India, Malhotra received her medical degree in 1964, finishing her post-graduate and post-doctoral training in England before immigrating to Canada in 1975.

She started her medical practice in Prince Albert the following year becoming the city’s first female obstetrician.

She has received many honours over the years. In 2001 she received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award. She became a member of the Order of Canada in 2006 and was named Citizen of the year in 2007 for Prince Albert. She was also recently named one of the top 35 women of Canada by Canadian Living Magazine.

She has also been inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Canadian Women’s Council and was given the Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

In 2019, she donated $800,000 in her late husband’s name towards the new NICU at the Victoria Hospital which will be named in their honour.

Following the budget announcement in March, the province said it will invest in 33 new staff positions for the NICU, which is expected to open this spring.

Malhotra said the one thing she will miss the most after retiring is her relations and contact with all her patients.

“Thank you to all the patients for all the support I’ve had from them all these years and I appreciate it very much.”
