‘Hard work pays off’ for Battlefords gymnasts at provincials

Six members of Battlefords Gymnastics Club competed at provincials over the weekend in Yorkton in a strong showing to cap the competitive season.

Featuring four athletes from the local artistic program, and two from the rhythmic program, Sage Graw placed second on bars and Fiona Silver registered four personal-best scores at Junior Olympic level 3, while in Xcel Gold, Jemma Sadlowski placed fifth all around, and Juliet Toews finished seventh on floor.

On the rhythmic side, both Habren Jones and Emberley Rutley set new personal-bests finishing third all around in 4B Junior (Jones), and 4th all around in 3B Junior (Rutley).

Competing against a number of larger clubs from across the province, from centres such as Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert, office administrator with the Battlefords club, Natalie Elliot said it was special to see the girls find success following their hard work this season.

“All of our athletes really competed the best they could and did amazing,” Elliot said. “Provincials is a large competition, so for somebody from a small club like ours to place fifth or seventh, all around or on floor is amazing, and you can tell their dedication and hard work has paid off.”

This year marked the club’s first provincial showing in three years since pre-pandemic in 2019.

Elliot said just being able to compete again at a high level really benefited the club’s athletes this year, from their training to the actual competition itself.

“It’s been amazing for these girls and boys that have been in this club since September, just knowing that they could compete again; you could see the dedication and love for the sport return,” she said. “Knowing they could compete they really put their heart and soul into this club and all of the routines they worked on.”

Provincials marks the end of the competitive gymnastics season, with a final fun meet in Wainwright, Alta., next month.

Battlefords Gymnastics Club will hold their competitive tryouts for next season June 4 at 1 p.m., followed by their year-end showcase June 5. For more information, contact the gymnastics club at (306) 445-2298.
