May long weekend marks summer kickoff for Candle Lake

The weather right now may not be promising for outdoor events, but by the long weekend it’s supposed to be a lot sunnier. Count the resort village of Candle Lake among those hoping that’s true.

As is their tradition, they’ll be hosting a summer kickoff event this Saturday. With more people getting out of the cities as summer approaches, it promises to be a well-attended event.

“The May Long Weekend is kind of the kickoff to summer and we always have an annual welcome back to the lake event here at Candle Lake,” said CAO Brent Lutz. “That’s taking place this weekend. Looks like the weather is going to be cooperative.”

Community clubs will have booths set up in the community hall on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The curling club will host a barbecue that day as the resort village prepares for what they hope will be a busy summer.

“On June 16, we’ve got the garden fair celebrating the year of the garden,” Lutz said. “It’s hosted by Communities in Bloom, and the Candle Lake Garden Committee, and this will be held at the community grounds.”

Deeper into the summer, the biggest infrastructure project the resort village will be working on will be good news for pedestrians. Upgrades to walking paths are coming thanks to some funding from SGI.

“We’re enhancing our walking trail system,” said Lutz. “There’s an extensive network of walking and bike paths here at Candle Lake, and it’s something that people like to do when they come to the lake. Our crews have been installing delineators along Main Street to make walking safer for pedestrians here.”

Meanwhile, the walking track is not only getting a revitalization but an extension. With walking being such a common activity in Candle Lake and the area, protecting pedestrians from traffic becomes a major priority.

“We’re also extending our walking trail north along Highway 265 to get some of the pedestrian traffic off of the shoulder of the road,” Lutz said. “That will also make it safer here for people.”

Lutz added that during COVID, more and more local people were finding their way to Candle Lake as it was harder to travel further afield. He also said while the weather this long weekend wasn’t likely to be terribly warm, it was at least supposed to be sunny from Saturday right through to Monday.
