Dust off the plate and get the peanuts and cracker jacks ready, senior baseball season opens tonight.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect the postponement this afternoon of the North Battleford Beavers-Macklin Lakers game in Macklin, due to the rain.

The North Sask. River Baseball League (NSRBL) season kicks off this evening (May 19), with six of the league’s 10 teams in action.

The Meadow Lake Sox host the Mervin Flyers, while the Wilkie Brewers travel to Unity to play the Junior Cardinals, and the St. Walburg Reds are in Lloydminster to face the Twins.

Originally scheduled as a full five-game slate, the North Battleford Beavers game in Macklin was postponed this afternoon due to rainy conditions, joining Kindersley’s game at Standard Hill which was also postponed because of the rain.

Player/manager with the North Battleford Beavers, Kyle Gregoire said while they may now have to wait until Tuesday to open their season in Wilkie, the team is still looking forward to getting their schedule underway.

This marks the first year since 2017, the Beavers will be joined by the Battlefords Trappers’ players on an amalgamated local team, bringing only an added air of anticipation with the new season.

“We’re a really excited group getting ready to have both teams playing together this season and being able to showcase a great Battlefords team,” Gregoire said. “We’re looking forward to getting going, and just as a group, we’ll be a little bit better at every position, so hopefully we can have a good run here.”

Pitcher and infielder with the Meadow Lake Sox, Craig Weran said their team is eagerly awaiting the season start, on their home diamond at Meadow Lake’s Assman Field this evening.

“It’s been a long winter and we’re excited to get going here again against Mervin,” Weran said. “We’re looking forward to showing people what we’ve been doing so far this year as we think we’ll be pretty competitive, so we look forward to hopefully a great turnout tonight as we always get good local support.”

In an added wrinkle with tonight’s game in Meadow Lake, the Sox will also be unveiling their provincial championship banner before the game, in a special tribute to last year’s team which featured a pair of Mervin Flyers as well (on loan), in Dustin Mcnab and Cole Ohare.

All three games on the opening night docket will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Beavers-Macklin Lakers game has been rescheduled to June 5 at 4 p.m. in Macklin, while the Kindersley-Standard Hill game will be played Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Standard Hill.
