Mix of sun and rain forecasted for Victoria Day weekend in La Ronge

There’s a chance of rain in the tri-communities this May long weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang is forecasting a cold start to the weekend in La Ronge as a weather system that recently moved through southern Saskatchewan continues to draw cold, northernly winds in the region.

As it approaches Monday, there will be a gradual improvement with sunnier skies and warmer temperatures.

Friday is expected to hit a high of 10 Celsius with a chance of rain or flurries and a nighttime low of 1 C. Saturday is predicted to be sunny with a high of 14 C and Sunday will be 16 C with a mix of sun and clouds. The overnight low for Saturday is 3 C and for Sunday it is 6 C.

“We are running below seasonal averages, though,” Lang said. “Average highs for this time of year for the past 30 years are 17 C with overnight lows around 4 C. We are struggling to reach those marks, but at least we will get some sunshine.”

A weather system will move through La Ronge on Monday bringing a high of 12 C and a 30 per cent chance of showers. The overnight low will dip to the freezing point.

“It could be worse. It could be snowing. We’ve got snow in the southern parts, so it could be worse than that. Overall, not a bad weekend,” Lang said.

For the rest of May, Lang mentioned temperatures will begin to warm, especially by the end of next week. She explained there’s a large upper ridge trying to form and that always bring heat.

Thursday is forecasted to be 23 C with a mix of sun and clouds.
