A First Nation community is coming together to support one of their families after losing their home in a tragic fire.

It happened on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation early Thursday morning.

According to Chief Edwin Ananas, the fire left a family of 11 members without a permanent home.

“The house didn’t totally burn, but there was a ton of smoke damage. The furnace malfunctioned which actually caused the fire.”

The family has since been moved into the senior’s hall on the First Nation, where Ananas said the community is taking care of them.

“They’re well taken care of in the interim until we can find another home for them. We supply all the groceries they need, clothing, bedding and beds, it’s equipped with a kitchen. They’re in good hands.”

The First Nation is asking for donations for the family, specifically clothing for the adults and the kids ages 5-16.

Ananas said they’ve already received donations from their community and nearby towns.

“We had some ladies from our neighbouring community (of) Duck Lake, who have offered to donate items to them, also.”

To help with donations, contact the Emergency Response coordinator at Beardy’s & Okemasis Cree Nation.
