Children North closer to fundraising goal thanks to LLRIB donation

A fundraiser for a 15-passenger van with a wheelchair lift that will be used to transport clients of Children North received a large boost of support on Tuesday.

Several Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) councillors, as well as staff from Children North, came together for a cheque presentation in the amount of $10,000. The donation comes from the LLRIB Internal Council and brings Children North’s fundraiser to $58,261 out of $85,000 goal.

Coun. Michael Bird explained most of the clients receiving care at the organization are LLRIB members, so it only makes sense to provide the financial support.

“Just imagine how much easier it is going to be for the handicap clients they have to get in and out of the vehicles and to be able to go to their appointments and just to take them places,” he said. “They are such an important part of our community.”

Bird mentioned when he saw the fundraiser for the van, he didn’t understand why the government wouldn’t fund such a critical service for Children North clients. He also called on La Ronge and Air Ronge municipal councils to match the LLRIB’s contribution.

“All of the communities that they support, I hope they can find it in their heart to donate to this special cause,” Bird said.

Children North executive director Daina Lapworth was impressed and thankful for the donation and she noted the LLRIB has always responded when the organization is in need. She added the van has already been ordered and is expected to arrive in early 2023.

“We’ve done a whole bunch of fundraisers, and there’s been various organizations that have done fundraisers for us and who have made large donations,” Lapworth said. “It’s just been a whole community support project.”

The van will be used to transport clients to therapy, along with assist with family engagement support, parenting classes, mentorships, staff training and recreational outings.
