Tri-communities registered for national physical activity challenge with $100,000 prize

May 31, 2022 | 4:06 PM

Organizers of the local ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge would like to perform as well or even better than last year.

The challenge is a national physical activity initiative with the main goal of getting Canadians as active as possible throughout the month of June. The main prize is $100,000 and the title of Canada’s Most Active Community.

In 2021, the tri-communities placed within the top six out of 2,200 teams and organizers had to send in a submission on why the region deserved to win competition. Last year’s winner was North Grenville in eastern Ontario.

“Overall, we are looking at a total of about 18 different types of programs,” said La Ronge community services manager Connor Tessier. “Some of them are running [multiple] times per week and some of them are just one-off programs.”

The kickoff for the challenge will begin at 6 p.m. at Patterson Park and other locations. Patterson Park is hosting the raising of the Pride Flag, the Pimiskatan Canoe Club Open House and beach volleyball.

Several local businesses are also encouraging tri-community residents to be active including The Source, which has sponsored free mini golf at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre this June and all summer. The centre’s golf simulator will be free throughout June thanks to Cravings Late Night Food and Mid City Electric is paying for equipment rentals from June 1 to 15.

Eagle Point Resort is offering free golf Monday to Thursday between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Montreal River Outpost and the Boreal Outdoor Recreation Association are also planning events.

“That’s not to discount all of the volunteers that are helping us physically run all of the programs because we certainly couldn’t do it without the help of all the volunteers,” Tessier said.

To register for the challenge, residents must download the ParticipACTION app and enter their local postal code. All points submitted through the tri-community’s postal codes will go towards the region’s overall progress. Anyone with questions about the challenge are encouraged to reach out to Tessier at recreation@laronge.ca.
