Surging Beavers ready for home opener, Monday

Jun 6, 2022 | 1:33 PM

With a league-best .750 winning percentage through their opening four games, the North Battleford Beavers have come out swinging this spring.

With a 3-1 start to the season, they’re now getting set to host Standard Hill for their home opener, Monday.

Due to construction at Beaver Lions Stadium to implement new lights, Monday’s game will be held at Diamond #4 behind the Access Communications Centre, with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.

Player/manager with the Beavers, Kyle Gregoire said the team is looking forward to their first game in front of the home crowd since late-August 2021.

“It’s getting close to 10 months now, so it’s been a while and we’re excited to get in front of the fans again,” Gregoire said. “It looks like it should be a nice, calm day out there, so hopefully we can get a decent amount of fans out and can have a great start to the season at home.”

Though their first four games of the schedule, the Beavers have topped Wilkie, the defending champions from Kindersley, and the Unity Junior Cardinals, with their lone loss coming Sunday afternoon to Macklin. The team has also scored at least six runs in all but one game (their 5-4 victory in Kindersley).

Gregoire said with the bats working early, the team has the potential to do big things this season.

“We get the hits at the right time, and our pitching has been good as well through these first four games, so now we just need to pick up a little bit on the defensive side,” Gregoire said. “If we can put it all together, we should have some really good success against any team in the league.”

Standard Hill are 3-2 to open the year, but have a plus-six run differential, having outscored their opponents 26-20 through their opening five games.

Monday’s showdown in North Battleford will be one of two games on the North Sask River Baseball League slate to open the week. Also in action, the Kindersley Stallions (3-2) will travel to Mervin to play the Flyers (0-4).
