Battlefords athletes shine at track provincials

It was a strong showing for local athletes representing the Battle West District at Track and Field Provincials in Regina over the weekend.

North Battleford Comprehensive High School

Grade 11, Ryan Taylor led the way for the Vikings, setting a new provincial record in junior boys quadrathlon with 2278 points, while in the senior boys ranks Jackson Geddes took home a silver medal in the 400-metre and sixth in 100-metre hurdles, and Kobie Anderson took 10th in 100-metre and 200-metre.

In senior girls’, Jadyn Wilkinson placed eighth in the quad, and Daivan Scherman 10th in 1500-metre and 800-metre, while junior girls’ Hayley Scherman finished sixth in long jump, and Reece Somerfeld was seventh in junior girls 3000-metre and ninth in 1500-metre.

In intermediate, Nicholas Prescesky took home an eighth-place finish in boys 200-metre, while Taylor Hebert finished ninth in girls 3000-metre.

John Paul II Collegiate

Finishing fourth in overall school points in the 4A category, JPII was led by senior, Benedit Mbwebwe who won a silver medal in senior girls 4×400-metre relay, and fellow Grade 12, Charlotte Adamcryck who finished fourth in the 4×100-metre relay and sixth in both 100-metre and long jump. In senior boys’, Grade 11 Josh Fransoo placed fourth in triple jump and sixth in high jump.

Grade 10 Taylor Bugg won a silver medal in In junior girls’ javelin and Grade 10 Kateryna Derevianko took eighth in junior girls 4×100-metre relay.

In the intermediate age group, Grade 9 Matteo Miedema took home a pair of bronze medals in long jump and 200-metre and finished fourth in 100-metre and fifth in the 4×100-metre relay, and Grade 9 Sophie Pyle finished fifth in girls 200-metre, seventh in triple jump and seventh in the 4×100-metre relay.

Altogether, the North Battleford high schools finished with a gold, three silver and two bronze, with four additional top-five finishes as the Battle West District placed fifth overall in total points.
