CCHS student wins bronze at track and field provincials

A Grade 10 student from La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School earned a bronze medal at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s Provincial Track and Field Championships this past weekend.

GeAnne Roberts was one of several students to travel to the competition in Regina to represent the North Central region. Others who travelled to provincials included Reay McKay, Andrew Jeon, Alyssa Lacourciere and Pesim Searson.

Roberts was the lone athlete to earn a medal at the event, doing so in high jump. She also competed in shot put.

“It feels pretty good. Everyone is congratulating me,” Roberts said about the win.

Roberts was training for the event three times per week, as well as doing extra practices without the team. High jump is her favourite event and she focused much of her training this year at doing well at it.

Coach Beckie Groves explained Roberts was training for about one month and even had one-on-one coaching from herself and teacher, Derek Konga.

“She was really committed,” Groves said. “Her whole sport career this year at Churchill was training for high jump. High jump is her forte. She loves high jump, everything she does is because of high jump. Even on the basketball team, all she really wanted to do was get better at high jump. It was kind of on the back of her mind the entire year.”

Groves also called Roberts a determined athlete and a hard worker. She noted the track season wasn’t the best this year as it’s proven difficult to get the program back up and running again after COVID.

In addition, Groves wanted to credit Roberts’ parents for their commitment by travelling to districts and provincials.

“GeAnne is just a great kid all around. She tries really hard in school. She involves herself in everything,” Groves said.
