Coming off a district performance to remember in his hometown, North Battleford’s Ryan Taylor turned heads and put his name in the provincial track and field record books over the weekend in Regina.

Representing North Battleford Comprehensive High School with the Battle West track team, Taylor took first place in three of his four events in the junior boys’ quadrathlon, to set a new provincial record of 2278 points, eclipsing the previous high of 2265.

Taylor couldn’t help but smile and shake his head when asked about the record.

“The funny thing is, I actually didn’t know I broke the record until the awards ceremony when a guy I was competing against told me,” he said with a laugh. “But it was really good, my mom and my dad both came down and watched all my events and I was glad they were there so that I could share it with them.”

Starting the meet with a first-place finish in the 100-metre dash with a time of just 12.06 seconds (earning him 639 points), Taylor followed it up by taking first in the long jump, leaping 5.55 metres (429 points) and first in the shot put, heaving the shot 10.89 metres (539 points), before finishing just over a second back of top spot in the 800-metre as well, with a time of 2:19.73.

Ever modest in his achievements, Taylor said the experience wouldn’t have been possible without the encouragement of his track and field coach at the high school, Shaun Webster. After all, it was Webster who first told Taylor about quad, and encouraged him to compete in the event.

“I always did track, but I used to just throw and do triple jump,” Taylor said. “I was just going to do that this year, but my coach said quad would fit me perfectly, so I figured I’d try it. […] now two months later I end up with the provincial gold. So it wouldn’t have happened if he didn’t say anything, and I’m really thankful for that.”
