BGC Battlefords ready for race following Club Day

Heading into Race 4 Kids, Boys and Girls Club (BGC) Battlefords are feeling the energy of an exciting new season.

The local chapter of the national non-profit recently celebrated its first ever Club Day last week, a celebratory event designed to raise awareness for their programs and services. Executive director Nicole Combres said it exceeded their expectations.

“We had lots of fun things for the kids to do, it was a blast,” she said.

Club Day kicked off with a ceremonial flag raising at North Battleford City Hall, where they had more than 125 kids come out, along with teachers, school board members and more. After that, more than 200 people were in attendance for a barbecue that also featured bouncy castles, face painting, and other youthful festivities.

Combres said she was struck at how the atmosphere felt different at this event than anything else the club has hosted in the past two years, both amongst the adults and kids.

“It honestly felt like we had moved back to pre-COVID days, when we were all able to gather, celebrate and come together as a community,” she said.

Now, the club’s attention shifts to Race 4 Kids this evening, one of their staple fundraisers. Registered teams will compete in a 10-part race around the community and complete tasks along the way. Scott Campbell Dodge is this year’s featured sponsor, while several other businesses have raised funds for the club through the event as well.

Combres said she’s looking forward to getting adults in the community racing on Thursday, which will end with festivities at Blend Restaurant & Bar.

“It will be a great way to celebrate the end of a school year and to come together after two and a half years where we had to stay apart,” she said.

Racers will take off at around 6:00 p.m.
