Local Artists Showcase Their Skills

Local artists getting together to show off skills at Art in the City

Artists across the northeast will have a chance to showcase their skills with Art in the City.

The July 1 event will give artists in the area the chance to display their pieces in the comfort of their own homes and studios with a list of location provided at Melfort City Hall.

Members of the community will then have an opportunity to create their own walking or driving tour of all the artistic stops.

Kathy Gray, co-organizer of the event told northeastNOW that the pandemic didn’t slow down artists wanting to share their talents with the community.

“Two years ago, during COVID lockdown, we had a quilt parade. It was a huge success.”

Last year the event opened up to all different types of art forms including quilters, woodcarvers, card markers and more.

“We were asked if we could expand it to all forms of art, which we did and it was great. We have a really wide variety of artists in Melfort and it is just loaded with talented people.”

Gray encourages all artists regardless of skill and confidence levels to participate to network, share and inspire others.

“It’s a chance to have exchanges with other artists, it’s a chance to show people how much is happening in the community and it could be encouraging for some artists as well.”

The event is scheduled to take place across the town wherever artists have available space. If people are from out of town, a city of Melfort location will provide creators space for their display.

“People will set up on their own in their homes and their front yards or backyards,” Grey explained. “This worked well for the quilters that were in condos. They had been displayed on their balcony, so it was a drive-by kind of thing.”

In previous years, wood carvers were set up in one of the shelters at Spruce Haven park and 12 city artists in another.

The event will take place on July 1 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A complete list of artists will be available at city hall on June 30 and July 1.

“I feel like it really gives everybody an opportunity to showcase their skills, whether they’re beginning or a professional artist. This art walk in the city is for absolutely everyone.”
