MMIP project displayed in North Battleford

The stories of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) were on display in North Battleford today.

Library Park was the site of a project from advocate Naomi MacAloney, focused on the lives of 24 men and women from Indigenous communities. The display included dresses and shirts along the trees with framed pictures below that include stories of individuals identified as missing or murdered.

MacAloney said many people told her they found it pretty striking, but also shocking. She said a lot of people were asking if this was the total number of missing names, only to find out the actual total is well over 300.

“I got to tell that no, it’s only around 10 per cent of the women who are missing,” she said.

“Two people said to me that they didn’t realize just how many there were and that it opened their eyes quite a bit.”

MacAloney said she tried to do one project of this nature for her birthday every year and is going to continue that in the future.

“Last year we did hearts for residential school kids and this year I did this,” she said. “Next year I’ll do something similar, because it’s something I’m passionate about.”

A few of the families of the people featured were in attendance and were satisfied with the display, including some of the family of Ashley Morin.

‘I had jerseys donated and conveniently I had hung a jersey above Ashley’s picture and turned out to be her number,” MacAloney said. “They thought it was really nice.”

This project will return this month at two separate events. Stephanie Tootoosis, Morin’s first cousin who briefly attended the display as well, will include it during a pre-release event of her book Namoya Tepipayin, Kahkkīkê Tepiayin. The project will also be part of the displays at the WDM Museum on National Indigenous Peoples Day.

“It might be a little bit different than this, given we’re outside, but the same concept,” MacAloney said. “Hopefully I will have more names included.”
