Locals named to Team Sask for Canada Cup, Canada Summer Games

A trio of Battlefords locals will be repping the green and white on the volleyball court for Team Saskatchewan this summer at the 2022 Canada Cup and Canada Summer Games.

Taryn Hannah was named to the Women’s 19U CSG Team, and Rylan Teasdale to the Men’s 19U CSG Team, each of whom will participate in both events, while Josh Bell was named to the Men’s 16U Selects White Team which will compete at the Canada Cup.

A veteran on the provincial team, Hannah, who is coming off her first season with Brandon University, has been involved with Team Sask. since the 15U level and said she’s looking forward to getting back to competing with the team on the national stage for the first time in a best-on-best tournament since the pandemic.

“It’s just awesome to finally know this is happening, after all, we’ve been waiting for, and training since 2020, that it’s all a reality and we have this to work towards,” Hannah said.

“I’m super excited and hopefully all these years will just pay off and we’ve got the best shot we can going after a medal at the Canada Games because that’s been the goal all these years and now it’s finally time to go after it, so it’s a great feeling.”

Both Hannah and Teasdale will compete at the Canada Cup with their 19U teams, on July 20-24 in Calgary, and at the Canada Summer Games on August 16-21 in Niagara Falls.

Bell will be making his Team Sask. debut this summer with the 16U team and talked about what making the provincial squad for the first time means to him.

“It’s definitely a huge boost in confidence as this is my first year playing a high school season, so I’ve been getting a lot of experience from that and the club season, and now this is going to be a lot more continued development,” Bell said. “It’s going to be a really fun experience playing at the Canada Cup and just getting to meet all the guys and training with them.”

The Team Sask invite is just the latest in what has been a strong start to Bell’s volleyball journey, coming off a provincial championship with the John Paul II Crusaders senior boys’ team in November. He said he wouldn’t be where he is now without the coaching and guidance he’s received.

“Our coaches [locally,] Shelly Fransoo and Shallen Barabash, are great coaches to have and that’s one of the biggest reasons I have been able to develop into a better volleyball player,” Bell said. “We also had a lot of experienced players who were really supportive too and my parents; if it weren’t for them, none of this would be possible.”

Bell and his 16U team will compete at the Canada Cup on July 21-24 in Calgary.
