NBCHS celebrate best of school year at Awards Nights

Jun 15, 2022 | 1:06 PM

North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) held its Senior Awards Night on Tuesday, celebrating the best from the past year in the arts, athletics and academics.

Just over 190 students were given year-end awards, just a night after another 120 were honoured at the school’s Junior Awards on Monday.

Academic Advisor at the high school, Kara Rigden, said it was great to see so many students and families out to celebrate the school year at both events, as this week’s celebrations marked NBCHS’ first year-end awards since pre-pandemic in 2019.

“It was a packed house and everyone was excited to celebrate the achievements in person,” Rigden said. “We are very excited the students are back in school full time so they can pursue their academic endeavors and also take part in clubs and teams as well.”

Among the award winners on the night was Grade 12, Jadyn Wilkinson, who was named Student of the Year (Most Points), in addition to making Honour Roll with Distinction, receiving an Art Award, and Top Offensive Player with the senior girls’ volleyball team, and MVP, Top Offensive and Top Defensive Player with the senior girls’ basketball team.

Following a challenging last two years with the pandemic, Wilkinson said it was special to be able to return to a number of extra-curricular teams and events in her senior year.

“It was awesome, and especially with COVID and taking two years off, getting to play with everyone again was amazing. It was super fun and I’m really happy about this senior year,” Wilkinson said.

Fellow Vikings’ senior, Jackson Geddes also took home a pair of basketball awards for Most Valuable Player and Top Defensive Player. He said it was ‘a great night’ to be able to come together to celebrate with teammates and friends one more time prior to graduation.

“It was nice to get together one last time and see everybody recognized for what they were successful in as we had a great year,” Geddes said. “This year as a team we had a lot of success and we were a really young team, so I was just happy to be recognized as a leader amongst that really good group of guys.”

Grade 11, Ava Beausoleil, received Honour Roll with Distinction, Most Valuable Curler, Excellence in French 20, and the Band Parent Award for Grade 11. She said getting involved with school and a variety of extra-curriculars is something she looks forward to each year.

“I really like being involved in the school, you meet a lot of cool people that you don’t normally meet just in a regular class, so it’s really important to me to be involved and do all these different things to become a well-rounded person,” Beausoleil said.

More awards and scholarships/bursaries will be given out on NBCHS graduation day at the end of the month, June 30 at 11 a.m.
