Red-hot Beavers look to continue roll against defending champs

Jun 23, 2022 | 1:00 PM

The North Battleford Beavers have been a must-see attraction for senior baseball fans this season in the North Sask River Baseball League (NSRBL).

Winners of five straight, the Beavers sit atop the league standings with an 8-1 record, marking the team’s best start to a season through nine games in over a decade.

Now, as they ready to hit the 10-game milestone on the schedule, perhaps it’s only fitting the team will face one of their toughest tests to date, in the defending champion, Kindersley Stallions, tonight at Diamond #4 in North Battleford.

Thursday’s game will mark the second and final time the Beavers and Stallions will meet this season after North Battleford edged out their rivals to the south with a 5-4 victory in extra-innings late last month in Kindersley.

Player/manager with the Beavers, Kyle Gregoire said the team is looking forward to a strong test again from the Stallions this evening.

“They’ve only been in the league for a few years now, but I would say they’re one of the top teams,” Gregoire said. “They’re a young squad, so it’s always a fun, good atmosphere to be playing those guys, and we’ve been on a bit of a roll here for the last four or five games after that one loss in Macklin, so the guys are excited for this one.”

The Beavers’ dominance this year comes following their amalgamation with the Battlefords Trappers prior to the season, with the top local players in senior ball in the community uniting on a single team for the first time since 2016.

Shortstop and pitcher with the Beavers, Gavin Nolin said the overall depth of the roster has been key to their success this year.

“The thing with us is that our lineup is so deep, one through nine there’s not a weak spot,” Nolin said. “It doesn’t matter where you’re hitting in the lineup, everyone’s coming up with big hits when they need them and the entire team is in it to win it, so I think that’s what’s leading to our success.”

Tonight’s game will be at 7 p.m. Diamond #4 is found just behind the Access Communications Centre, near Beaver Lions Stadium.

Also in action around the NSRBL Thursday, the Macklin Lakers (7-3) are at the Unity Junior Cardinals (3-7), the Wilkie Brewers (7-3) are at the Mervin Flyers (1-8), and the St. Walburg Reds (3-7) are at the Meadow Lake Sox (5-4).
