New Police Women’s Commission holds first meeting

For the first time ever, the new Women’s Commission for Prince Albert Police came together in one room.

The first meeting of the new Commission happened Thursday morning with representatives committed to supporting the organization and community as special advisors to the Chief of Police.

“In partnership, we are the voices of change that will empower and influence our community and police service to balance trust,” said Chief John Bergen.

According to a statement released by police, the “members of the women’s commission represent the various intersections of our community. They work, volunteer, and are leaders in the community, addictions, mental health and wellness, opportunities for youth, gender and sexual diversity, integrity management, Indigenous teachings and tradition, counselling and support for victims of trauma and violence.”

The meeting on Thursday began with a smudge led by Prince Albert Police Service Elder Liz Settee, followed by a prayer by Police Chaplain Nora Vedress, who are co-chairs of the commission.

The members of the Prince Albert Police Service Women’s Commission include Diana Wooden, Tanya Tootoosis, Gina Martin, Erin Parenteau, Robin Poliszuk, Sherry McLennan, Deborah Smith, Jennifer Lenny, Ashley Grimard, Vicki Stewart, and Elder Liz Settee. Chief Jonathan Bergen and Deputy Chief Farica Prince along with Chaplain Nora Vedress.

“Each member of the Women’s Commission brings different experiences and knowledge to the table, and I value their courage and dedication as we move forward on our shared priorities,” Bergen said.

Thursday’s meeting featured discussion and collaboration on a mission statement for the Women’s Commission to reflect its intention, shared values, and the goal of raising awareness, educating, supporting healing and wellness, and creating a safer community for all.

“I’m excited to be part of the Women’s Commission working together to support our community through inclusive leadership and positive action,” Deputy Chief Farica Prince said.
