Kinistino looking to win second national Communities in Bloom competition

The Town of Kinistino is facing off against a town in Nova Scotia in a national competition.

Communities in Bloom (CiB) recently announced the nominees for the annual National and International competitions which look to recognize areas for their beauty and environmental standards.

After winning in 2015, Kinistino is taking part in this year’s Class of Champions small category against Pugwash, Nova Scotia.

Angie Bragg, chair of Kinistino CiB, told northeastNOW there are many parts of the community they want to highlight including the new community centre.

“(The judges) might not be able to get an inside look at it because it’s still being constructed, but that’s a major, major undertaking for the town.”

Judges will be in town on July 22. This is the first time Kinistino has taken part in the competition since 2019 as they didn’t participate over the past two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bragg is hoping these judges have the same reaction as many do when they pass through the community.

“There are times we’ve been out weeding or whatever and people stop by and they’re like this place is actually quite nice.”

She added a nearby community has also reached out asking for tips to improve their image.

While the three-member local CiB team deserves most of the credit, Bragg explained the town’s council also plays a big part.

“If we need money, they’re usually there to help us get everything looking beautiful.”

Meanwhile, Melfort is also taking part in CiB’s competition.

The community is looking to win its first national title which would put them into the Class of Champions category and then the international competition.
