SMVS hosts largest graduation ceremony ever

Jun 29, 2022 | 4:29 PM

It was a big day for Senator Myles Venne School, which hosted its largest graduation class to date.

In all, 37 graduates attended a special ceremony at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre where they received their high school diplomas. It began with an opening prayer from Elder Ambrose Charles followed by an honour song by the Northern Boys.

Several dignitaries also had the chance to speak including principal Robert Whiteman. He told graduates they had completed a big accomplishment during a pandemic, which forced students to learn online and from home.

“You did everything you had to do to graduate,” Whiteman said. “Don’t give up on your goals, strive to be what you want to be, be as happy as you can, and I wish you all luck in the future.”

Gwen Bird and Chasity Roberts were both named as the 2022 valedictorians. They both spoke about how they’ve reached a milestone in their lives and how their classmates should feel proud of themselves.

“I know the friendships and the memories we made will last a lifetime,” Roberts said. “To our fellow graduates, take a look at yourselves. You are all graduates today. You should be proud of yourself. We worked hard, remained focused, and accomplished one of the major steps towards the rest of our lives.”
