Back Alley Tour ‘back’ at it

Jul 5, 2022 | 12:09 PM

The 2022 Back Alley Tour is back in Melfort again this year, once again promoting local artists.

The event was cancelled in 2020, however, was one of few things actually able to take place last year, due in large part to it being outside.

Event Promoter Sandra Dancey told northeastNOW that thanks to having some continuity with the event, it’s reaching a larger audience.

“So interest locally is always good and local artists are always happy to be a part of it, but interest is growing and expanding. Sometimes we get them from as far away as Prince Albert and Saskatoon, which we do this year. Tisdale and Nipawin are always very much a part of it as well.”

Thursday, July 21, will mark the day of the event, which will run from two in the afternoon till eight at night.

There will be artists displaying their art as well as selling it, a buskers stage, music and crafts for kids.

“The artists are hanging out in the back alley showing their work. It’s for sale. Usually, some of them are working on pieces. A lot of them are visiting with each other and exchanging ideas. It’s a very family-friendly thing and it’s just a great way to display all of the talent we have in this part of the world, which I don’t think a lot of people fully appreciate,” added Dancey.

The event, which always takes place in back alleys, will happen behind the Legion this year. Dancey noted she’s always very appreciative of all the businesses who give away their parking for the day.

“The whole point of this is to be very inclusive of the neighbourhood. There are lots of people that appreciate the talent we have, so they all work together really well and support each other. The whole point of this is for everyone to demonstrate and support one another and show just how much talent we really do have around here.”

The Back Alley Tour will also serve as a kickstart to the weekend, which will feature the Melfort Parade and Fair. Dancey explained this is a great way to bring in more people.

“It’s just on the cusp of fair weekend, which is why we chose the date because often there are people home for a visit or on holidays anyway. it’s just a really nice time of the week to wander through. People haven’t taken off for the lake or anything, so they can come by and see how much talent we have.”

She also mentioned that more volunteers are wanted for the event, so it can run as smoothly as possible.

“We always appreciate more volunteers, especially now that there’s a kid side to all of this. It’s nice to have a few people willing to keep an eye out and make sure that the cars stay out of the back alley and the kids don’t run out onto the street. So volunteers wanted for anything they can help out with. Just make it easier for the artists and keep an eye on the kids and keep it safe and friendly for everyone.”
