Wheat overtakes canola as most farmed crop in Saskatchewan for 2022

Jul 6, 2022 | 1:51 PM

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may have played a big part in what crop Saskatchewan farmers decided to plant this year.

According to Statistics Canada’s latest crop report, 13.2 million acres of wheat have been planted across the province. Wheat, more specifically cereals, is one of Ukraine’s biggest exports.

The amount of land being used on wheat in Saskatchewan is also up 10 per cent from last year. This includes spring wheat and durum wheat.

The crop has officially passed canola as the most farmed in Saskatchewan.

Canola crops are totaling around 11.4 million acres in Saskatchewan which is down six per cent from last year.

The report noted despite higher prices for canola, many farmers have shifted to other crops such as wheat. There’s no exact reason as to why, however, the war in Ukraine may be the top option.

Coming in as the third most farmed crop in Saskatchewan is lentils, followed by barley, and oats.
