It’s been a remarkable year on the senior ball diamond for the Esau family.

Brothers Dylan and Brett Esau will see their names go into the North Sask River Baseball League (NSRBL) history books, following a season for the ages with their hometown Meadow Lake Sox.

Together the pair became the first brother duo to sweep the NSRBL year-end awards, as Dylan was named League MVP and Top Pitcher, while Brett took home Top Batter distinction.

A true ace on the mound, Dylan led the senior league with a shimmering 1.00 ERA (earned run average) and .86 WHIP (walks/hits per inning pitched) in 21 innings.

In a similarly dominant fashion, Brett finished at or near the top of the batter leaderboard in virtually every major statistic, with a league-best 22 runs, 24 RBI (runs batted in) and five homers, while also finishing third in hits (20), and second with a .541 batting average.

Dylan called it something special to be recognized as MVP this year.

“It’s an honour, can’t say I was really expecting it but it was a pleasant surprise for sure,” the younger Esau said. “I had a good year on the mound, found I was able to throw a lot of strikes and just give us a chance to win, which is all I was trying to do; just go out there and give our team a chance to win every night.”

Together the pair helped lead Meadow Lake to the fourth seed overall with a 9-4 record, while scoring a league-high 123 runs, and allowing just 55 against, good for third-fewest, for the best run differential in the league at plus-68.

Veteran pitcher and infielder with the Sox, Craig Weran said it’s been something special to see what the pair have been able to accomplish this year.

“We’re really proud of both those guys and the seasons they’ve had, and really happy to have them as teammates because they are a big, big part of our team,” Weran said. “Dylan is a great pitcher with a really lively arm, and Brett’s a tremendous hitter with lots of power, so to have him behind the plate with Dylan pitching, that’s a tremendous duo.”

The Meadow Lake Sox will travel to Standard Hill tonight (Wed) for Game 2 of their best-of-three quarterfinals series with the Lakers. First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m.
