Hawks host annual Tobin Lake Walleye Championship

The Nipawin Hawks hosted their annual Tobin Lake Wallyaye Championship this past weekend bringing in a total of 99 teams.

The event, which serves as one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the club, brought in $22,000 last year.

According to Team Administrator Debbie Posehn, this year’s event is expected to raise more, for a couple of reasons.

“We’re hoping to make a little more than that this year with the new registration fees. Last year, they couldn’t have the supper or the beer gardens and it was drive-through registration. It was definitely a different atmosphere and the guys were really excited to get back together and be able to visit in person after the day of fishing, so that helped.”

Because the competition was able to occur without restrictions this year, Posehn told northeastNOW it was able to run a little smoother.

“They seem to enjoy being able to get together and visit, part of the socializing process of the whole tournament isn’t just sitting on the boat for two days by yourself. I think they kind of enjoy comparing notes and giving each other a rough time.”

Hawks, old and new, were spotted at the event, joining in on the fun and lending a helping ‘wing’ when needed.

“Tad (Kozun) was there for part of the weekend and we one team member come back who actually hasn’t played here for three years. It was nice to see the alum getting involved and players that aren’t even officially on the team yet because they’re still too young, but they’re on the watch list. They came out and helped as well, so it was kind of nice to see that.”

Luke Sholter and Desi Serelo won the entire thing, for the third year in a row, while there were a handful of others who took home different prizes, which can be found on their Facebook page.
