Saskatchewan artists highlighted in the northeast

Jake Vaadeland and the Sturgeon River Boys are visiting Melfort tonight, July 15, in the CJVR Performing Arts Theatre at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Vaadeland, an emerging 19-year-old artist from Park Valley, Sask. has been touring across the country and the province recently as a beginning to his music career.

He told northeastNOW he couldn’t have imagined anything better than getting to pursue his dreams close to home.

“I’m really happy that we can make it work here in Saskatchewan, as long as we have now, for the last year and people are still willing to attend our shows over and over again. I’m very pleased with the amount of support that we’ve been getting from all the local people here, it’s been really good.”

And while some musicians may prefer the big stage and the spotlight, according to him, there’s nothing better than connecting with the crowd and playing in smaller markets.

“I’m an old-timey person, so I really do enjoy the small town theatres and those audiences that you have there because that’s something that you don’t get a lot of anymore,” he said. “To have that community time and bring people together and put on a good old time show again and bring that back to the people here, it’s been a long time and I’m glad that we can do it.”

Vaadeland was nominated for a total of four Saskatchewan Country Music Awards back in April, which included Emerging Artist of the Year, Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Alternative Country Album of the Year.

He ended up taking all of them home.

Since winning those awards, he explained the impact it’s made on his career and what he now has to look forward to in the future, because of it.

“I didn’t really realize sort of what a big deal it was and that it was more than just the awards. Since we won, it’s been helpful for us to get bigger opportunities and say that we’ve got these things under our belt now.”

They will be joined by special guests Freddie and Sheila Pelletier who will open the show at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students. The show is anticipated to run until roughly 9:30 p.m.
