SHA issues advisory after blue-green algae found in Little Manitou Lake

Jul 17, 2022 | 1:22 PM

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is warning people planning on swimming in Little Manitou Lake to be extra careful.

They’ve issued an advisory as blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) has been found in different areas of the lake.

This algae looks like slime, grass clippings, fuzz, or globs on the surface and can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown, or pinkish-red. It’s also known to smell musty or grassy.

This doesn’t mean people can’t go in the water; however, they should avoid all contact with the algae.

If someone does come in contact, they should wash with water as soon as possible. If they don’t, they could experience skin irritation, a rash, a sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, a fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Symptoms usually last for a day or two and are known to be more pronounced in children.

More information can be found on the SHA’s website.
