La Ronge Hooks ready for provincial action starting Friday

Jul 18, 2022 | 4:31 PM

The 13U La Ronge Hooks hosted the Prince Albert Royals Sunday as both teams prepared for this weekend’s provincial championships in Macklin.

“This was the first home game for this group of kids since they started playing ball,” La Ronge and Area Minor Baseball president and 13U coach, Corey Borthwick, said. “This team has been together for the last three years and this is their first home game, so it doesn’t happen very often.”

The La Ronge Hooks won the double header against the P.A. Royals with the first game being 15-14 and the second one being a blow out. The event was held at the recreation grounds located at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

Borthwick noted the Royals have two provincial teams and, in recent months, the Hooks have been able to play both of them. The Hooks have previously played in tournaments in Saskatoon in May and another in June in Prince Albert.

After Sunday’s performance, Borthwick is excited to see what the team can accomplish at provincials.

“The team is hitting really well right now,” he said. “Hopefully, that rolls over to next week.”

The 2022 Baseball Sask. Provincial Championships begins Friday when La Ronge takes on the Battleford Beavers at 3 p.m. On Saturday, La Ronge will also play the Macklin Lakers at noon and the Nipawin Giants at 6 p.m.

There are 77 teams competing and teams will need to place in the top two in their pools to advance.

In previous years, the 13U team competed at provincials in Regina in 2021, as well as Mossbank in 2019. Provincials were not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another minor baseball athlete, Criseyde Borthwick, will also be competing this summer on two provincial teams. She’s representing Saskatchewan on the girls 14U team attending the Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg in August, as well as the 16U team at nationals later this year in Prince Edward Island.

Declan Borthwick and Ben Mayo also made top 40 for the boys 13U provincial team. They won’t find out if they made the team until August.
