Decisions ahead

Contract still unsettled for skate park project

Meadow Lake has not approved a new contractor for the skate park project.

City council held a special meeting Monday evening to discuss bids from two companies for the project’s tender. Ultimately, the city declined to award the contract at this time, given the bids both exceeded the already determined budget.

Mayor Merlin Seymour said the proposals weren’t able to be within budget parameters when PST was taken into account.

“There’s still some negotiations we have and some work on the design…The team has to go back and see what’s needed to get in line with the dollars available.”

This project is being undertaken through a Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) grant, which is through PrairiesCan, totaling $262,500. This is 75 per cent of the estimated cost of $350,000, with the remaining $87,500 covered by the city.

Municipal funding is roughly halfway complete, thanks to a $40,000 donation from Tolko Industries and $5,000 from NorSask Forest Products. The skate park will be located in a vacant space in Lions Park.

“There will be some opportunity for more fundraising so that it doesn’t affect taxpayers,” Seymour said.

The two companies that entered proposals were the Canadian Ramp Company and Drop In Skateparks Inc., with the former the only one to indicate the capability of completing the project this year. Seymour said they will work to still find an agreement with Canadian Ramp.

“They’ve done multiple skate parks in the previous year,” he said.

“The committee is going to go back with Colliers and talk to the people that submitted the bid just to see if they can bring it within line [of the budget].”

In order to complete the project by the grant deadline of March 2023, it must be finished within this construction season.

Council’s next meeting is July 25.

Still waiting

The city has still not heard anything regarding the insurance for the arena fire, which occurred last year.

“It’s a lot longer than anything anyone here was hoping for,” he said. “We’re also still hoping to hear for the grant as well regarding the multi-use facility.”

“Biggest thing is dollar values with bringing the proposed new arena up to proper codes. It’s somewhat frustrating, but we just have to await their decision.”

Administration applied through the ICIP grant to have a facility with multiple services in addition to a new arena. Seymour said without the grant, the multi-use building will not happen.

“Hopefully we’ll hear sooner than later.”
