Edam Blue Sox take provincial championship in Moose Jaw

It was a home run weekend for the Edam Blue Sox 15U team who capped their season with a provincial championship.

The team won their AA Tier 3 provincial tournament in Moose Jaw, serving as the cherry on top of a season to remember for the Blue Sox boys, who also took home a league championship earlier this month.

Coach Martin Smith said the key to the team’s success was their all-hands-on-deck mentality, with contributors from throughout the lineup pitching in to make a difference in the biggest moments.

“We got contributions from everybody, and I think when you can get timely hits from the bottom part of your [batting] order, that really helps and becomes a key part of your success when everybody’s contributing.”

The Blue Sox won four of their five games on their way to the championship, opening their tournament with a bang, topping the North East Knights (Melfort) 15-14, and Wynyard Blues 16-10 in back-to-back victories.

The team did fall 14-13 to the Saskatoon Blue Jay Bandits in their lone loss of the weekend, though were able to bounce back quickly heading into the playoff rounds.

There, the Blue Sox topped the Regina White Sox with a commanding 15-6 win to clinch top spot in their pool, punching their ticket to the gold medal game.

Staring down the tournament host, Moose Jaw Canucks (Grey), the Sox would not be denied taking home a 17-7 victory in just seven innings of play to clinch the provincial championship and take home the gold.

Brady Carr hit the winning run for the Blue Sox in the clinching victory, while Myles Mosinann led the way from the mound with a strong pitching performance.

Smith said what really stands out about the championship is seeing just how far the team has come as they continued to grow and up their game as the season went along.

“We just continued to develop and improve throughout the season,” Smith said. “We knew heading into provincials we had to limit the number of errors we were going to make, and that we had to be mentally tough to get through some situations when they arise, and we were able to do that and pull out a championship.”

In other provincials action around the region, the Maidstone Lakers won 11U AA Tier 2C provincials in Unity, taking top spot in their pool en route to an 8-7 win over the Meadow Lake Sox in the championship game.
