Another Ukrainian refugee experienced local support in the Battlefords.

Julia Milway and her family were presented with $720 from Northern Nurseries over the weekend. Owner Judy Dwinnell said they had been looking to do this for months.

“We were collecting for a donation to any Ukrainian refugee, not knowing who would be coming to town,” she said. “Once I found Julia, I found she was helping out a girlfriend of mine and appears to be quite popular in the community.”

Dwinnell noted the crisis in Ukraine has had an impact on the Battlefords. She added that individually, she feels a connection because of her ancestry.

“My grandma and grandpa come from the Ukraine and my Dad was Ukrainian, so this hit home for me,” she said.

According to Dwinnell, Milway never thought they’d get here. Thanks to friends giving aid, she was able to make her way across the border and ended up in Canada.

“She said it didn’t matter where she was at, anything was better than living underground in cold shelters,” Dwinnell said.

When presented with the donation, Milway was overwhelmed, thanking the community for the warmth and kindness her family has received.

“It was unexpected and I was shocked, honestly, by the kindness of Canadian people,” she said.

So far more than 1,000 displaced Ukrainians have come to Saskatchewan since the war began.
