18U Beavers on quest to defend provincial title

Jul 21, 2022 | 5:00 PM

In less than 24 hours’ time, the Battlefords Beavers 18U baseball team will be at the plate on their home diamond for provincials.

The Beavers are the hosts of this year’s AA Tier 2 provincial tournament, July 22-24, and enter play as the defending champions from last year’s provincials in Saskatoon.

Head coach, Dean Dimmick, said the club is looking forward to the chance to defend their title in front of family and friends in North Battleford.

“I think it would be special, there are lots of players who never get a chance to win at provincials, let alone have the opportunity to do it back-to-back,” Dimmick said. “We also only have four or five guys from last year’s team, so we have 10 players that didn’t get to experience it with us last year and it would be great for them too get that chance.”

DImmick said if there’s one key to the Beavers’ success this weekend, it comes down to their attention to detail defensively as a group.

“Our bats have come alive the second half of the year and as a team we’re batting over .300 now, which is much improved from where we were at the start of the year,” Dimmick said. “The key now is our defense. If we can play some strong defense and be error-free, our pitching has been our backbone all year, and I think we’ll be competing come Sunday.”

This year’s provincial tournament will feature eight teams from across Saskatchewan, with the Beavers guaranteed at least three games through the round-robin and a chance for more should the team advance to the playoff rounds.

The tournament will be split between a pair of North Battleford diamonds, with games at both the Blue Jays Diamond located behind the Don Ross, and Diamond #4, behind the Access Communications Centre.

Games will begin Friday at 1 p.m. when the Saskatoon Blue Jays play the Lumsden Clubs at the Blue Jays Diamond and the Muenster Red Sox play the Saskatoon Cardinal Sluggers at Diamond #4.

The Beavers will open their tournament Friday at 4 p.m. against the Saskatoon Athletics at the Blue Jays Diamond. The full tournament schedule can be found here.
