Drivers warned to slow down on August long

Jul 29, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The Government of Saskatchewan is asking motorists to exercise caution over the August long weekend.

In a release on Thursday, Battlefords MLA and Highways Minister Jeremy Cockrill asked drivers to slow down through work zones when travelling to visit provincial parks.

“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend,” he said. “By slowing down and obeying signage in work zones, we can ensure that drivers and workers all get home safely at the end of each day.”

Construction work is taking place in several parks in the province, including the Battlefords and Provincial Park and Meadow Lake Provincial Park. The speed limit in these zones, unless otherwise posted, is 60 km/hr.

Even if workers aren’t present, the province is asking drivers to obey signs, stay alert and slow to 60 km/h through work zones, which can contain hazards that may not be easy to see, like sharp pavement drops or loose stones.

Speed fines, tripled when workers are present, start at $210 and increase by $3 for every km/hr over the speed limit up to a speed of 90 km/hr, and $6 for every km/hr over 90. Thus, a driver who speeds through a work zone at 100 km/hr will be issued a fine of $450, plus a victim surcharge of $80.

Some tools to help plan for travel include a weekly highway construction update, the Highway Hotline and dialling 511.

The Ministry will improve more than 1,100 km of provincial highways this year.
