La Ronge council selects Oct. 5 for byelection to replace mayor

Residents of the Town of La Ronge will be headed to the polls Oct. 5 to elect a new mayor.

The date for the byelection was selected on Aug. 2 during a special council meeting at noon hour. The earliest day for the by-election to occur was Sept. 12 and the latest possible date would have been Jan. 25.

By law, council is required to set a date for a byelection no more than six months after the date the vacancy officially began.

Colin Ratushniak provided his verbal resignation at the July 19 regular meeting, which was formalized by written correspondence on July 26.

Advance polls, if required, will be held Sept. 28 from noon to 7:00 p.m. Current sitting members of council are permitted to run for the mayor’s position, and if the seat is filled by a current councillor, a subsequent byelection will be required for the vacated councillor seat within six months.

This will mark the second byelection since the general election in November 2020. The first byelection occurred to replace the late Hugh Watt’s councillor position after he suddenly passed away in August 2021.

The cost of the byelection is set at $1,200 with an additional 60 hours of administrative time.
