ACT supports community with donations

The Associated Canadian Travelers (ACT) are showing support for community organizations in the Battlefords.

ACT donated $5,000 to the Battlefords Community Players, $5,000 to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #70, $5,000 to the Battlefords Army Cadets, and $5,000 to the Royal Canadian Air Cadets #43 Squadron the Battlefords.

Don Dament with the ACT said giving back to valuable community-based organizations is something important to the club.

“It’s all charity and volunteerism. We run the bingo hall, and all the proceeds from the bingo we’ve tried to give back into the community,” Dament said. “These are donations we thought as a club would make for a considerable donation, so we were happy to do so.”

Executive producer with the Battlefords Community Players, Donna Challis said the funds donated will help the club purchase a much-needed new lighting system, something they have been working towards for some time.

“Our current lights are between 20 and 40 years old, they run very hot and for about a year we’ve been working to raise funds for this, so boy, this really helps,” Challis said. “We are really pleased and thrilled and we just can’t thank the ACT enough for their donation and the support of the community.”

President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #70, Gord Brown, said the funds they received will help them to repair the roof and allow them to get a new furnace.

“Times are tough and we’re always looking for volunteers or anything that can help us survive and it’s people like the ACT that really help,” Brown said. “From the bottom of my heart and the Royal Canadian Legion, we thank them very much.”

The final two donations were given to the Royal Canadian Army Cadets and Air Cadets. The Army Cadets’ donation was presented to Captain Marnell Weikle and the Air Cadets’ to Captain Joyce Ptolemy.

Ptolemy said the funds will help with upkeep expenses, as well as potentially a new project to help make the Air Cadets building even more accessible to all.

“This helps us out tremendously,” Ptolemy said. “We own the building, so we have to do upkeep, but we also want to make it so some of the cadets who may have a disability can be involved as well, so this will hopefully go towards making the building more inclusive for everyone.”
