North Stars re-up head scout Riendeau

The Battlefords North Stars have announced a two-year extension for head scout and assistant general manager, Wylie Riendeau.

Riendeau has been an invaluable piece of the North Stars scouting/recruiting process since first joining the club’s staff nine years ago, the last five of which he has served as head scout.

“Obviously it’s pretty exciting, I think [head coach and GM,] Brayden [Klimosko] and I and the rest of the staff do a pretty good job of getting along well and recruiting, and it’s good to be back with the Stars,” Riendeau said. “It’s going to be an exciting year with all the guys we have returning and the new guys coming in, so I’m looking forward to getting going.”

Since Riendeau first joined the club ahead of the 2013-14 season, the Stars’ success on the ice speaks for itself. With two league championships (2017, 2019), the team has finished either first or second overall in the league standings six of the last eight full seasons, making the playoffs each year while winning 67 per cent of their total games.

“Obviously he’s a big part of our success, and he’s been around longer than all of us coaches and other staff members and he’s a big part of why we’ve consistently been one of the better teams in our league over the last seven or eight years,” Klimosko said.

As is the nature of the scouting position, much of Riendeau’s work is done behind the scenes, watching countless games and recruiting: making connections with teams, players and their families.

“He mentioned to me he watched over 300 games last year, so he’s all over the place watching games during the week and on weekends,” Klimosko said. “He’s the guy that’s in the stands watching games, or on LiveBarn or HockeyTV, and not only watching but talking with kids and parents.”

“People see that and really appreciate how well he shows the Battlefords organization and gets guys to come play here.”

Riendeau has remained busy throughout the summer months, attending summer camps, showcase events and preparing for fall camp just around the corner.
