North Stars to host 2023 SJHL Hall of Fame ceremony

Aug 9, 2022 | 3:00 PM

It is already shaping up to be quite the celebration for the Battlefords North Stars’ 50th Anniversary next year.

It was recently announced the organization will serve as hosts of the 2023 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Hall of Fame induction ceremony, headlining their half-century festivities.

The news was announced at the 2022 induction celebration over the weekend in Humboldt, featuring a Broncos-heavy inductee slate including Bob Beatty, Jared Bednar, Dean Brockman, Sheldon Brookbank, Wade Brookbank, Kelly Chase, Chris Cuthbert, Curt Giles, Elgar Petersen, Brett Stewart, and the 2007/08 Humboldt Broncos National Junior “A” Championship team.

North Stars head coach and general manager, Brayden Klimosko, was on hand for the weekend’s celebration as one of 15 returning representatives from that ’08 national championship team.

“It was obviously a pretty cool event to be a part of and it was really good to catch up with some old teammates, fans and friends,” Klimosko said of the experience. “I was pretty tired Monday, but it was overall just a great weekend,” he added with a laugh.

It is an experience the coach is looking forward to being a part of in the Battlefords next year, in what he called a great way to celebrate 50 years for the local junior hockey team, first established in 1973 under the ‘Battlefords Barons’ moniker.

“Obviously we’re looking forward to it, and I don’t think there’s a better time to do it than the 50th anniversary year,” Klimosko said.

“It’s a chance to honour some past North Stars players that have a chance to make it into that Hall of Fame and it should be an exciting celebration. It brings a lot of energy, and it will be an exciting event not only for the Battlefords, but the people getting inducted as well.”

President of the North Stars, Kyle Kellgren, said the event will showcase the community and its passion for junior hockey.

“As a club we love to show people how great it is to be in the Battlefords and how great of a hockey club we have here, so we’re really proud as a community-owned team to be able to bring in an event as high-level as this,” Kellgren said. “It will be great to have lots of people come to North Battleford and celebrate with us.”

Further details pertaining to the time and place of the 2023 ceremony will be determined in the months to come.
