Men of the North partner with Cameco to provide mental health programming in Cigar Lake

Men of the North will deliver mental health programming at Cameco’s Cigar Lake operations twice per month until the foreseeable future.

“We are pleased to announce that through the work we continue doing and the work we have completed, Cameco has taken notice and has invited us to introduce our workshops,” Men of the North founder, Christopher Merasty, said. “We can promote healthy communications and dialogues with Cameco staff that would benefit their mental health and well-being.”

The first meeting will be held Aug. 22, which will include an introduction to the men’s support group. Merasty will let the participants know what the programming entails and get a feel for how much interest there is among the employees.

Through a partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Prince Albert branch, he is hopeful the group will be able to offer additional supports and resources.

“They are paying for our flights and accommodations to get up to the site for a day,” Merasty said about Cameco. “We will come in and perform the workshops in the evening and in the morning and then fly home the following day.”

In recent months, Merasty explained administration from Besnard Lake Correctional Camp have asked Men of the North to return. Back in September 2020, volunteers with the group travelled to the camp to deliver similar programming to inmates.

Merasty mentioned because of COVID-19 concerns, those meetings had to come to an end.

“Now that we are coming out on the other side of the COVID era, we’ve been invited back there,” he said. “We have to see what our capacity is like, and if we are in a good position if we can maintain a program out there, as well as the tri-community and Cigar Lake.”
