The Federal and Provincial governments are investing $1.1 into early childhood education in Saskatchewan

Childcare is about to become more affordable for Saskatchewan families.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced yesterday that they are reducing the cost of childcare in the province by up to 70 per cent. This is with the help of a federal investment of nearly $1.1 billion.

Chelsey Balaski, senior media relations consultant with the provincial government, told northeastNOW that the Government of Saskatchewan continues their commitment to making life more affordable for families.

“Through reducing fees, we are continuing to build a stronger Saskatchewan for families across the province.”

In order to qualify for the funding, child care facilities need to be licensed by the Ministry of Education.

In Melfort, three facilities will be receiving funding while both Tisdale and Nipawin has four facilities eligible. A full list of facilities across the province is available on the Government of Saskatchewan website.

Balaski said that reducing expenses for families with children under the age of six is part of a much larger project ahead for the province.

“This parent fee reduction is another step toward achieving the province’s commitment to reach an average of $10 per day for children under age six by March 31, 2026.”

Previously funding was given to regulated facilities to help reduce parent fees by 50 per cent retroactive to July 1 2021. Beginning on Feb. 1, 2022, families began seeing reduced fees at their providers.

Although fees will vary by facility, families can expect to pay approximately the following price for a full-time monthly fee:

• Childcare Centres
  • Infant $237, Toddler $200, and Preschool $200
• Home Daycares
  • Infant $236, Toddler $220, and Preschool $200
