Results are in from a recent daycare survey issued by La Ronge council.

The survey was released to the public last month and it was designed to assess the current and future needs for daycare levels in the area. It included nine questions mostly aimed at people needing child care services or those interested in operating such a facility.

In total, there were 81 participants with 50 from La Ronge, 18 from Air Ronge, five on-reserve and eight in other areas. Forty-nine of the respondents need child care during weekdays, while another 13 need services before or after school. Four needed child care on weekends, two on week nights, and 13 didn’t need child care at all.

The survey identified 83 children in the tri-communities were currently in need of child care. Of those, 20 are five years of age or older, eight are four years, nine are three years, eight are two years and 25 are one years old or under.

Of the 81 respondents, eight were interested in operating a daycare facility and six wanted to open a day home.

The issue of the lack of child care facilities in La Ronge was discussed by council at a regular meeting on Wednesday. Council was presented with five options such as providing resources and information found in the report, providing start-up or community grants or even exploring having the municipality own and operate such a facility.

The town was also presented the choice to provide land or facilities to an interested operator, as well as ease municipal regulations and be more lenient with granting day home approvals.

“I think the most feasible thing would be to open the municipal grant program to a whole daycare that was interested in developing or starting one,” said deputy-mayor Viviana Ruiz-Arcand. “If we get into regulating a daycare or operating a daycare, we don’t have the capacity to do that.”

Out of the five options, council agreed to share information from the report to any individuals who are interested in starting a daycare in La Ronge.
